Angela Rabie, PhD, Interim Coordinator, School Psychologist

I am a school psychologist with HCS and have had the honor of working with Ms. LeCount for the past two years on projects designed to bring awareness across departments to improve the identification and evaluation of potentially dually identified English Language Learners. Ms. LeCount demonstrates a very broad range of expertise and knowledge in her field of supporting English language learners. She also has extensive knowledge in the area of special education. Ms. LeCount has taken the lead on several ELL department initiatives and is an invaluable resource to her team and individuals in other departments, including psychological services.

professionalism is without parallel, as she consistently exhibits respect for others, sensitivity, and a calm but assertive demeanor. What truly sets her apart is her ability to consistently deliver exceptional results in all her endeavors. She exhibits outstanding organizational and time-management skills and is always ready to help others and work on new projects. She is efficient, and her work quality is always outstanding. Ms. LeCount demonstrates exceptional communication skills and is able to build effective relationships within and outside her department. Ms. LeCount is a natural leader.

As a 20 year veteran teacher, I was shocked to learn how much I DIDN'T know about the field of special education. It wasn't until I attended a Professional Development session presented by my co-worker, Ms. Shanna LeCount, that I fully understood the ins and outs of providing quality instruction for students with special needs and ensuring that those students receive the accommodations and modifications that they need to be successful in school. The instructional techniques that Ms. LeCount routinely uses and encourages others to use have now been added to my own bag of tricks and can be seen throughout the curriculum that we created together when we were teachers of English Language Learners. Shanna is a diligent Education Specialist with knowledge and expertise in the area of student support and interventions. Her attention to detail and knowledge of interventions and student support make her a valuable member of our interdisciplinary Student Success Team. My experiences working with Shanna LeCount have been wonderful. She is incredibly knowledgeable, caring, and hardworking. She is always willing to share her input and work to problem-solve to ensure that student evaluations are accurate, and yield useful information. After she has given an academic assessment, she always communicates how the student scored, and her professional opinion. She is deeply involved with all of her student’s cases, and genuinely cares about them, and their progress. Her classroom is beautifully organized, and her students are making appropriate progress, but when she notices a student may be struggling she collaborates with the team to determine what we can do to assist the student. When attending Shanna’s IEP meetings I always know what to expect, as she is well organized, and knowledgeable when communicating with parents.

Shanna and I met while working at Hampton City Public Schools. Shanna worked in the ELL

department and I work in the Occupational Therapy (OT) department. During that time, I got to know Shanna through shared students on our respective caseloads. Shanna was a pleasure to work with because she exhibits a pleasant and positive attitude when I was participating in co-treatments with her. Shanna took the initiative to learn about what skills OT was completing with the student and would utilize those strategies during her sessions with the student to increase the student’s success in having carryover between each of the treatment disciplines to further promote the student’s functional abilities. Shanna demonstrated strong skills in organization and preplanning her sessions to be ready for each of her sessions. Additionally, she also demonstrated flexibility in her sessions to re-organize her plans to coincide with the students'; level at that time. It’s not just Shanna’s technical skills that impress me, Shanna was a joy to work with because of her amazingly positive attitude and energy.

I have worked with Shanna LeCount as our grade-level Education Specialist. Shanna is one of the hardest working Education Specialists I've worked with in my twenty years of teaching. She knows our shared students and what needs to be done to ensure their IEP goals are met. Shanna is knowledgeable about the special education population and knows how to support students of varied needs effectively. 

Shanna is a communicator. Often coming early or staying late to be sure we can connect and collaborate on student issues or needs as they arise. She works to ensure what we are doing in class is supported by her education classroom assistants as well as during her pull out time with our students. 

Shanna goes above and beyond to make her classroom feel like a special place for kids to come.  Knowing that transitioning between a mainstream classroom and a special education classroom can be difficult for students, Shanna works to make her classroom a place children want to come visit. With a warm and inviting environment and a positive reward system, our students look forward to this time with Shanna.

Shanna LeCount is a hardworking, passionate Education Specialist and in my time working with her, I've learned a great deal on how to support our students with special needs.

Laura Pribyl, 4th Grade Math Teacher and Admin Designee 

My name is Laura Pribyl, and I am a 4th grade teacher. I’ve had the opportunity to work with Shanna and it’s been a great experience. Shanna is the consummate professional, impressing me from the start by ensuring the Resource students in my class received all minutes designated on their IEP’s, which given the rotation schedule at my grade-level, can be difficult. She was definitely on top of the inordinate amount of paperwork required for Resource students and prepared all required report card  attachments on time with clear and detailed explanations for parents. Shanna is flexible, fun, and easy to work with. In IEP meetings with parents, she is reassuring and knowledgeable, able to respond appropriately to any questions. She worked closely with me to plan math instruction for our Resource students that supported them successfully during their rotation in the general ed classroom. She knew each student’s strengths and weaknesses in detail, and tailored her approach to them accordingly. My Resource students made significant progress and met their IEP goals each year. Students enjoyed working with her as she is very warm and supportive; often I would hear, “I’m going to wait and do this with Mrs. LeCount.” In my experience, Shanna is an extremely qualified and professional Education Specialist who would be an asset to any school.

As a 5th grade teacher and science lead, I have had the privilege of working with Shanna. While working together she had quite a large case load, and seamlessly worked with our team to reduce impact, as well as meet the needs of all of her students.

Students loved going to Shanna’s classroom. She provided them with a warm, welcoming, fun yet firm environment where they could truly be themselves and rise to their best each day. She makes strong connections with the families, making SSTs and IEPs an enjoyable experience. Families and students trust Shanna, and make their final decisions based on data and knowledge presented, and at the same time trust her teacher’s guidance.

Shanna made it a point to involve herself in school activities, galas, events, parent/teacher conferences, and performances. Shanna was a core part of our school community. Shanna has a gift for data and organization, as well as balancing a lot of metaphorical balls in the air. She would be an asset to any school community.

Shanna LeCount was an exceptional member of my fourth grade teaching team. Before she even met my students, she had taken the time to research their academic histories and needs in order to hit the ground running and help them reach their goals. Shanna had taken specific, targeted measures, reassessed often, and been open to discussion and feedback in the name of best serving our students. She is communicative with parents and staff, always with the best interest of students in mind. Shanna has aided me in targeting specific needs of my general education students as well. Shanna was an amazing leader for our team. She gave us clear directions for push in and pull-out group lesson plans and clear needs of each child on IEPs.
